Maglev Cubes: Are they worth it?

Maglev Cubes: Are they worth it?

Maglev Cubes are the newest innovation in the  cubing world, but cubes such as the GAN12 Maglev have had some criticism. Here are my views on the matter, and compiling information so that you can make an informed decision.

DISCLAMER: THIS IS OPINIONS, NOT FACTS. RESULTS MAY VARY FOR OTHERS.

What is Maglev?

Maglev, or Magnetic Levitation, is where two magnets have the same poles facing each other. They create a repulsion, which in a cube is used to replace a spring. The magnets are on a pole, so they can slide around, but don't go flying, and they can be adjusted using a sort of locking system, where they can't extend over a certain length. They are used in some cubes to eliminate friction on the spring, and remove spring noise! They are a great idea, and can be amazing if implemented correctly!

GAN12 Maglev UV

I own the GAN12 Maglev UV, and personally love it. It feels so much faster than the Gan 11 M Pro, and the long core magnets make turning almost effortless. YouCubers like J Perm have shown a catchment issue with the edges that I have been able to replicate, however personally I do not experience that issue in solves.

J Perm has made a way to reduce the issue, which I have dubbed the 'J Perm Swap'. This is where you take pieces from the Gan 11 M Pro and put them inside of the 12. J Perm was lucky with this, however, as the magnets did not repel each other in the edges and corners, and they were both UV coated. Z3Cubing has made a fix for this issue, where you take the tiles off the pieces, however I personally find this swap unnecessary, as the issue is not apparent on my cube. This swap also is extremely expensive, needing the GAN 11 and 12, totalling £104.98 ($140.72).

From my experiences the cube is absolutely amazing, and is my main, so if you want to take the risk of buying it, go for it! Buy it here!

RS3M Maglev 2021

I haven't tried this cube, hopefully going to get it soon, however have heard it was really good, and cheap, from other youtubers. I have less to say about this cube, so if you want to know more, search for reviews on YouTube, click here, and have a look around. At £14.99, ($20.09), it really isn't much to spend to have a go. Let me know your thoughts! Buy it here!

Conclusion

I think the idea of maglev is amazing, and I can't wait to see how it is improved and optimised in the future. I'm also excited to see if it gets implemented into bigger cubes, or pyraminxes, or even skewbs! If you are intrigued in the idea, I'd recommend going for the RS3M Maglev 2021, or if you want to splash out on a bit of cash, go for the GAN12 Maglev! See you all soon!
